The Chiropractor, the Tibetan Monk and the New Age Doctor

Obviously, I was in desperate need of a good chiropractor but knew instinctively the normal type manipulations this kind of doctor does wouldn’t be used; exactly what would be used, I had no idea at the time. And again Adel’s contacts proved to be invaluable; one of his colleagues in New Jersey had a similar multiple disc problem a year or so ago and said this lady chiropractor had saved his life.

Only problem was, this chiropractor was located in Chatham, New Jersey, a fair distance from Cairo, Egypt. The thought of having to fly that distance with a constantly painful back was daunting but something had to be done. Before Adel had time to react, the general manager of Lufthansa sent over two first class, round trip tickets to Adel’s office for me and refused reimbursement. Two seats, so that I could lay down during the flight -- the man was a saint!

Just after we put Places in Egypt to bed, I flew to New Jersey through New York where I was met by Adel’s colleague and his family. The wife had booked me into an adorable B&B just two blocks from the doctor’s office, and they took me to dinner that evening. All I really wanted to do was lie down but I couldn’t refuse after all they had done for me. But, I did get a decent night’s sleep and was in the doctor’s office the next morning.

After examination and more Xrays and MRIs or whatever they used back in 1988, Caroline, the doctor, determined for sure one of the three slipped discs was ruptured and she further diagnosed me with Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction. SJD is basically when your pelvis kind of tilts and twists its way out of position and this can cause other things (bones, joints) to go out of whack.

Caroline then told me about SOT or Sacro Occipital Treatments which, in very lay terms, is using spinal blocks and the gentle manipulation of the tissues in and around the damaged area with only the fingertips. Now people, I may have gotten some of this medical stuff misrepresented, so sue me. The fact of the matter is, the woman got me back on my feet with twice daily intensive treatments over 10 days.

Within two weeks, I was back at my desk, even though I was advised I’d need continued treatment. But I couldn’t just stay there until it all healed as this would take months; besides, Chatham, New Jersey can be quite expensive!

Adel had everyone he knew searching Egypt for a doctor who could perform something akin to chiropractic, but thus far, to no avail. So I was using ice to keep inflammation down and trying to be very careful with my movements.

Caroline told me walking was very good for me, so I again started walking back and forth to work and made an attempt at taking frequent breaks throughout the day to stretch. I say made an attempt because I was always one to become so absorbed in my work, everything else was a blue and would soon be forgotten.

Then along came the Tibetan monk. Yep, a real Tibetan monk who was away from his monastery for a period of six months. His mission was to move about into Third World Countries such as Egypt and help where he could. I don’t remember his name so let’s just call him Monk. He was an acupuncture specialist but not in the traditional sense that I had come to understand. He used extremely long needles, but he also put something on the ends that were not in your body and lit it. I could feel slight heat going into my body but nothing uncomfortable.

I’ve googled high and low and cannot offer you a name for this, or a site that might lead to better understand what this combination of using ‘lit‘ needles is all about but I will tell you it is not fire cupping. Perhaps it was something Monk invented, I really don’t know because his English was broken to say the least and we often had a difficult time understanding each other.

He gave me daily treatments for three weeks, but after that, he was moving on to another country. I will attest that his treatments helped me considerably for, after this time was over, I didn’t have nearly as much pain when sitting or standing.

By this time, an American journalist friend of mine, Muriel, told me about someone she was seeing; a Bosnian Internist who had converted to holistic medicine. This doctor's name was Sharia and at my first appointment, she asked me a lot of questions, put me into one of those open-backed hospital gowns and told me to lie down and close my eyes. We continued talking, but since it was taking some time and I was curious, I peeked from beneath slit lids… and saw that she was waving a talisman over my body.

Sharia was a bit upset to see that I had discovered her secret but she calmed down after we talked. Then she explained it was a semiprecious stone (something obscure, the name of which I don't recall) that she used as a diagnostic tool, and since most people were leery about things like that, she swore me to secrecy. To this day, I’ve never told a soul, including my friend Muriel.

After Sharia's initial diagnosis, she told me she could increase the circulation to the muscles and tendons around the injured discs and that she could help with the pain. And then she gave me shots containing saline, primarily in my upper body area. The shots themselves were painful and the areas would swell up, but after a couple of hours, my pain was greatly lessened. I took weekly treatments from Sharia for almost a year and almost felt like my old self at the end of that time.

Oddly enough, when I googled saline injections, I found something called Biomesotherapy Saline Injections which is described as useful for: “Increased circulation, fine nerve endings stimulation, muscle relaxation, influence acupuncture points and meridians, pain alleviation.” Well, I can tell you it worked and I’ve often wished I could find a ‘Sharia’ since I returned Stateside!

Of course, during all these varied treatments, Barbara and I continued working on Places in Egypt, and I am happy to say that it was becoming popular among the tourism trade and the visitors. Before very long, we had an agreement with airlines such as Lufthansa, Swiss Air and Delta to provide Places in their first and business class seats -- at a small fee plus the price of a full page color ad, of course. And, we had a welcome letter as the first page in each addition signed by none other than the Minister of Tourism himself, Fouad Sultan. We were very proud to print that letter every month, believe you me.

Places was going places and it showed in our advertising. All of our covers were sold with a year’s contract and we had many full page color ads inside, as well as multiple half page ones. We had engaged the services of freelance writers who were also journalists, Egyptologists, and/or professors at American University in Cairo and knew the country well. I’ll share some of these articles with you in the future.

Adel was amazed that after only 8 months we had actually made a profit… LE102 which was only about $34 in those days, but hey, it was pure profit and after we made a small payment toward our loans to the guys! I swear I think we got some of the advertising accounts just because of the novelty of doing business with two American women having the balls to start up a business in Egypt, but I didn't really care.

Barbara and I were getting along very well and my back was holding up. By this time, we had freelancers calling us to write for the magazine and we even had some potential advertisers call us; now that’s real progress. But, it was getting crowded in Barbara’s spare room and we knew we’d need a real office very soon. It simply was not looked upon as professional to run a business from your home, not in Egypt, not in 1988.

  1. Jane,
I didn't read all of this post. it's long and I'm at work, don't want to get busted.

But please, oh please email me. I was diag with SJD 2 years ago and have done almost everything I know of (short of surgery) for treatments and nothing has "helped" it. Please tell me if you ever found something close to a cure.

  2. When I read the title to this post, I expected it to be followed up with "walked into a bar..."

Remind me never to get back problems while in Egypt; I don't know anyone who'd comp me first class tickets to New Jersey.

  4. I dont know what its called but in a conversation with a friend this weekend as I was telling her about my visit to the acupuncturist SHE told me of her acupuncturist who did the very same thing .. lit the end of the needle not in her back/shoulder .. MY acupuncturist placed the needles and then turned on a heat lamp ... its my uneducated non medical opinion that the heat helps open/relax the muscles which then lets the blood flow more freely which speeds healing/reduction of inflammation.

This entire post including the non medical stuff was fascinating, I await the next installment

  5. The lit needle is called Tsubo to the best of my knowledge. It is to concentrate the energy through the accupuncture point.

Lucky you! You were aligned with the best healers!

I do Cranio Sacral Therapy which sounds a little like what you received from Caroline. You may be able to find someone in your area now who does this. The people I have worked with love it!

  6. Glad you got some relief, Jane. Years ago, my father had a horrible accident and lost part of his right hand. He said they gave him saline injections, too. His doctor must have been aware of that same phenomenon. Daddy had them take him off of morphine because he was becoming addicted and could tell it. I thought the saline was a placebo (he said it burned like fire), but from what you're saying, it works!

In addition to my physician at the Mayo Clinic, I see a naturopath who treats with herbs and diagnoses through an uncommon manner. She hits the nail on the head every time.

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  8. I've been thinking about some form of accupuncture for my back, but am having a hard time with the notion of paying someone to poke me with needles.

I may have to try it, though. :)

  10. Soxy: Have sent you email.

Jan: LOL, does sort of have that feel...

Braja: Read your post before mowing grass so now will back to link (after I shower!).

Daryl: Isn't it ironic that when you first hear of something that you've never heard of before, suddenly it's everywhere!? If I was in NYC, I wouldn't have a problem finding a qualified acupuncturist.

Comedy: OMG, where do you live? Hate to tell you this but 'the people in my area' don't even do good basic chiropractic, let alone something like cranial sacral therapy!

Quint/Sheila: I attest to the fact that it worked for me, but it was a firey pain for a good 30 minutes. Your father was lucky to have found a good doctor, and so are you Sheila.

    Sniffles: Thanks tons Janine!

Blognut: Just make sure they're really qualified and are experienced, and you shouldn't feel anything beyond a slight pinprick (and a little prick at that, tee hee).

  16. Sorry Jane, you had to go through all of this! I have a similar story about my health, but found a different solution - was planning to put it in my blog since someone asked me what my health problems were. Hope I can put it in a funny slant like you did!! I consider you a good writer.

  17. Mo: So I've been told; hope you can make it back later on a larger screen.

Michel: Oh, forgot to send you warning that I'd be posting another 'body' although that little Chinese guy may not fully qualify. Wish I had stayed in touch with Lufthansa GM too, but last I heard, he'd hightailed it back to Germany.

Willow: You and me both, although it sometimes helps if you have an inkling into how something works!

  22. I'm so interested in the treatment you've received. We must remember that all cultures have systems for healing. I have seen the heated needles, can't recall where, but it's supposed to help the Chi flow. The talisman is universal, and I think it is good for you to have found out about it..part of healing is believing it is happening.
I myself am a Reiki healer, for quite a while I've been an LDH (long distance healer). I receive a case each week and do what I can. With success, I'm told.
Stay in good health, and thank you!!

Love the stories of different healings. I agree with Lyn above - if you feel like it will be beneficial, it probably will be...

My acupuncturist has lit needles and also burned incense on key points. Seems to work great!

  26. My husband once used an acupuncturist for a while when he looked like a comma when he was standing up. It worked wonders on his back!

Did you ever get to write any articles or did you just set up the print and sell the ads?

And as always, a great story! Thanks for being such an encourager, too!

  27. Okay, when I read the title, I just knew you were going somewhere with a joke. . . and then I realized how amazing it was that you had the best of three different worlds of medicine! I love to hear how different types of doctors and specialists use medicine to help heal. . . and I am happy for you that those people were able to help you out! That diagnosis is horribly painful from what I hear. . .

  28. Otin: That is a gorgeous part of New Jersey that I didn't know existed until I went to Chatham; was really expensive though.

Onlya: You guys might be right in the believing it will help part; I was in so much pain at the time, I just wanted help and didn't really care where it came from.

Beth: Oh yes, I wrote many articles for Places and loved it; I'll share some of them some time. Glad your hubby had an acupuncturist he could get to!

Sharon: You guys are right in that the title so sounds like a joke lead in! I'm just lucky Adel had so many contacts by then, that were able to help.

  29. So what you're saying is that our secrets are safe with you but only for 30 years? LOL

Great story, Jane. I'm so impressed with your trust of unconventional treatment. I'm such a sissy......as I sit here with my sore back today. Where did you say this place is in New Jersey?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Smart: Yep, 30 years is the max I can keep my mouth shut evidently.

Well, I'd been going to a Chiropractor in Savannah for several years, so it was just the last two that was a bit unconventional for me.
BTW, knee problems only with old age, so you're safe on that for quite some time! ;-)

  46. Hello everyone!
I would like to burn a theme at this forum. There is such a thing, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of financial piramyde, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.

For quite a long time, I earn money with the help of these programs.
I'm with no money problems now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I get now up to 2G a day , and my first investment was 500 dollars only.
Right now, I managed to catch a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Turn to my blog to get additional info.
